Visualising AI spending: How does it compare with history's mega projects? World leaders and tech executives are convening in New Delhi for the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, focusing on the role of artificial intelligence in governance, job disruption and global collaboration. However, behind these discussions lies the financial reality. Over the past decade, AI has drawn one of the largest waves of private investment in modern history, totalling trillions of dollars. According to Gartner, a United States-based business and technology insights company, worldwide spending on AI is forecast to total $2.5 trillion in 2026, a 44 percent increase over 2025.

Random Reshuffling: Simple Analysis with Vast Improvements

Neural Information Processing Systems

Random Reshuffling (RR) is an algorithm for minimizing finite-sum functions that utilizes iterative gradient descent steps in conjunction with data reshuffling. Often contrasted with its sibling Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), RR is usually faster in practice and enjoys significant popularity in convex and non-convex optimization. The convergence rate of RR has attracted substantial attention recently and, for strongly convex and smooth functions, it was shown to converge faster than SGD if 1) the stepsize is small, 2) the gradients are bounded, and 3) the number of epochs is large.

Archaeologists in Mexico have uncovered a 1,400-year-old tomb in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca that had been lost to history. The stone structure, built by the Zapotec culture, known as Be'ena'a, or'The Cloud People', is adorned with sculptures, murals and carved symbols that suggest ritual significance. The Zapotec believed their ancestors descended from the clouds and that, in death, their souls returned to the heavens as spirits.

For decades, the Mendocino triple junction was believed to be where three tectonic plates meet: the San Andreas Fault ending in the north, the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the south, and the Mendocino Fault in the east. Because three major fault systems converge there, the area is one of the most active earthquake zones in the US and could produce a magnitude 8.0 quake. Now, researchers have discovered that the junction actually contains at least five tectonic plates or fragments deep below the surface, making the region far more complex than previously thought. That means there may be an unaccounted earthquake hazard in the area, and current models could be underestimating the true risk.
